During combat, you, your pardner, and your enemies can have different, ongoing effects.

On fire[ | ]

A character set on fire suffers damage each round, beginning at the amount of damage taken specified by the source and increased by 1 each round. Some bad guys have natural ability to set their enemies on fire. You can prevent this by becoming Patently Invulnerable, or remove the effect by using a full canteen.

For the player, there are several means by which you can inflict continuing fire damage. Some sources require the target to be flammable, an effect induced by using a can of kerosene.

Poisoned[ | ]

A poisoned character suffers a fixed amount of damage each round from the poison effect. Some bad guys, mostly being snakes, have natural ability to poison their enemies. You can prevent this by becoming Patently Invulnerable, or remove the effect by using a patent emetic.

For the player, there are several means by which you can poison an enemy. Well, except unguliths and skeletons, which are immune to poison.

Disabled[ | ]

Characters can be disabled (or stunned) during combat, preventing them from acting for a fixed number of rounds. As with other negative combat effects, this can be prevented by the universal panacea, Patently Invulnerable.

Sources[ | ]

The following are means by which an enemy may be stunned.

  • Susie Cochrane's Lasso skill can be used to disable an enemy for 1 round. This can only be done once per fight.

Invulnerable[ | ]

  • Some bad guys are invulnerable, and cannot be damaged by any means until a specific condition is reached.
  • Note that bad guy invulnerability is different from the potion effect of being Patently Invulnerable. The latter applies to you, and only protects you from certain effects, while bad guy invulnerability is total.

Insubstantial[ | ]

  • Some bad guys are insubstantial. This property reduces the amount of damage they take from any single attack by a bad guy-specific amount.
